In this edition of Get Better Every Day, we dive into a conversation with mortgage professional Cam Villa. Cam’s story is one of balancing family, community, and a thriving business while sharing wisdom on building systems, setting boundaries, and making time for what truly matters.

From Oakland Roots to Mortgage Leadership 🌱

Cam takes us back to his childhood in Sacramento, where education and sports shaped his life. With a mother working as a kindergarten teacher and a father in accounting, Cam grew up understanding the value of structure. However, losing his father to cancer at a young age left a deep impact, shaping his outlook on life and work ethic. Cam recalls, “I tried to act like everything was fine and kept working. But looking back, healing takes time.”

That sense of determination carried him into the mortgage business, where he and close friends built careers with Chase Manhattan. With time, he co-founded Golden Bay Mortgage Group, and today he applies the same resilience and discipline to his professional and personal life.

Carving Out 60 Days of Vacation and the Power of Saying No

Cam takes a unique approach to work-life balance: 60 days of vacation per year. 🏖️ But he clarifies—this doesn’t mean exotic getaways every month. Instead, it’s about stepping away from the desk and being present. “Sometimes vacation is just not working during conferences,” he says. Cam is intentional about planning family time well in advance, such as taking a month-long trip to Europe after his daughter’s graduation.

His philosophy is built on setting expectations with clients and using systems to ensure everything runs smoothly in his absence. “If you tell clients you’re available 24/7, they’ll expect you to be. But when you structure things right, they respect your time—and your service becomes even better.”

The Importance of Systems in Business Success

Cam’s success lies in processes. He shares his reliance on systems such as the Eisenhower Matrix—a four-part framework for prioritizing tasks. He explains:

  1. Urgent & Important: Tasks to complete within 48 hours.
  2. Schedule a Time: Things like doctor’s appointments or team meetings.
  3. Delegate: If someone can do it 80% as well as you, pass it off.
  4. Eliminate: Cut unnecessary tasks from your life.

This structure allows him to focus on being present at work and home. Having a strong support system, including virtual assistants and loan partners, is crucial. “You can’t be everything to everyone. The best loan officers know when to delegate.”

The Kickball League – Building Community Through Play ⚽

Cam’s love for community runs deep. He founded a local kickball league with the goal of fostering inclusion and addressing local concerns. “If we fill the park with community events, everyone can enjoy it—even the homeless,” he emphasizes.

The league now has over 150 participants, with business sponsors covering expenses to keep the cost low. Cam’s grassroots involvement also translates into business success, with multiple referrals and transactions coming from relationships built on the field.

Final Thoughts – Becoming the Best on Your Block 🏡

For Cam, success is about being the best within his local community—not chasing national acclaim. “I’m not trying to be the top loan officer in the country. I just want to be the best on my block,” he says. By focusing on personal development, setting boundaries, and investing in meaningful relationships, Cam exemplifies how to thrive in business without compromising on family or values.

Get inspired by Cam’s journey and ask yourself: How can you structure your life to get better every day? 🎯
