The Power of Authenticity
💡 Every entrepreneur’s path is uniquely their own, and today, we’re diving into a truly inspiring story. In this episode of Business Story of the Week, Joshua Lori sits down with Sunny, a remarkable entrepreneur whose career was built on embracing uncertainty, breaking away from traditional expectations, and carving out his own path. This interview sheds light on how focusing on passion over academics and leaning into authenticity can lead to incredible success in both business and life.
🌱 Sunny’s journey began in 2013 when he made a bold decision to prioritize passion projects over academic performance during high school. Raised in an Indian-American household that placed immense value on education, Sunny’s choice to step off the academic treadmill wasn’t easy. But, with a belief that following his passions would eventually pay off, he embarked on a non-traditional journey that would set the foundation for his future success.
Sunny’s Unlikely Path: Choosing Passion Over Academics
📝 “In 2013, I decided to step away from the race to get straight A’s and focused on what truly made me excited,” Sunny shares. As a student at the Illinois Math and Science Academy, Sunny was surrounded by some of the brightest students in the country. Yet, instead of trying to compete, he decided to prioritize a leadership class on social entrepreneurship that allowed him to teach and inspire others.
What was most striking about this period was how young Sunny was able to fully commit to his passion without fear. “People thought I was crazy,” he laughs. “But I just knew things would work themselves out.”
By embracing uncertainty, Sunny took a unique path that allowed him to build invaluable skills. Though his GPA was less than stellar (a 2.3, to be exact), Sunny’s experience teaching leadership shaped his career far more than any report card ever could.
The Power of Public Speaking and Building Social Skills
🎤 “One thing that has always stayed with me,” Sunny reflects, “is the confidence my parents instilled in me through positive reinforcement.” From a young age, Sunny was encouraged to socialize, greet adults, and engage in meaningful conversations. This foundation would later become his greatest asset as a public speaker and educator. He recounts how speaking on stage became a natural extension of who he was, further deepening his love for teaching and connecting with others.
“Social skills are everything,” Sunny emphasizes. “You can have all the technical knowledge in the world, but if you can’t talk to people, you’re going to hit a ceiling.”

Building an Unscalable Business: Solving His Own Problem
In 2019, Sunny took on one of his most interesting entrepreneurial projects to date: building a business to solve his own problem—discipline. “I’ve always struggled with routine,” he admits, “so I decided to create an accountability group where we could help each other stay on track.”
Sunny created an unscalable business that was all about maintaining habits. For $20 a month, participants would join weekly calls where they held each other accountable for daily habits like working out or meditating. The business was never meant to scale but instead solved Sunny’s personal need for discipline. “It wasn’t a million-dollar idea,” he explains, “but it worked for me and for the people in my group.”
Designing a University Class He Wished Existed
By 2022, Sunny’s entrepreneurial journey led him to Illinois Tech, where he designed a university class that was anything but conventional. “No lectures, no tests, no homework—just real-world projects,” he explains. The class was based on building businesses and solving problems, giving students the hands-on experience Sunny wished he had had during his education.
The course was a hit, with students praising its practical approach. “Entrepreneurship isn’t something you can learn in a textbook,” Sunny says. “It’s about rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty.”
Leaning Into Authenticity and Inviting Strangers to Dinner
Fast forward to 2023, and Sunny has fully embraced his authentic self. After leaving his corporate job, he’s now dedicated to following his passions without hesitation. His latest venture? Inviting strangers from LinkedIn over for dinner. “I wanted to connect with new people and expand my network in a meaningful way,” he shares.
Sunny’s journey is a testament to the power of embracing uncertainty and staying true to who you are. His advice to anyone considering taking a leap? “You already know the answer. Stop looking for it online, grab a pen and paper, and start writing.”
