Everyone remembers their first big fight – that adrenaline rush, the nerves, the excitement. For some, it’s a defining moment that sets the stage for the future. Today, I’m sharing my story of transformation, from a high school knucklehead who loved a good fight to an undefeated amateur fighter. 💥👊

Growing Up and Getting in Trouble

As a teenager, I wasn’t exactly a model student. In high school, I gained a reputation not for academic achievement or sports, but for something else entirely: fights at house parties. If there was a scuffle between schools, you could count on me to be in the thick of it. It was always St. Louis high school rivalries, and fighting was just a part of the scene.

But I wasn’t just a troublemaker – I saw myself as a trouble-solver. Yeah, I caused a bit of chaos, but in my mind, I was bringing order in a world of high school mayhem. 😎 I got comfortable with the adrenaline of the fight. When you’re young and reckless, it’s easy to feel invincible, and I loved the praise that came with being known for my fighting skills.

Transition to the Ring: From Street Fights to Amateur MMA

When the opportunity to take my fighting skills to the next level came, I knew it was time to make a choice. I could either keep getting into trouble and risk seriously hurting someone or worse – ending up in jail. Or I could channel my energy into something productive. So, I transitioned into the world of amateur MMA.

Was I nervous? Of course! But in many ways, it just felt normal. I had been fighting for years, but now there were rules, and the stakes were higher. The transition wasn’t as tough as it might seem. I had the background; I just needed to learn how to use it correctly. 🤜

The First Five: Undefeated in Amateur Fights

After stepping into the ring, I quickly realized this was where I belonged. Five amateur fights later, I was undefeated with a perfect 5-0 record and two titles under my belt. 🏆 My coach recognized that potential early on and pushed me to go further. My past as a street fighter gave me an edge when it came to stand-up striking, but my wrestling background helped balance my game.

My first boxing coach, Clyde Hicks, worked on refining my striking skills, while my friend and instructor Gabe, a black belt under the Gracies, helped me develop my ground game. Having a solid team behind me made all the difference. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me become a well-rounded fighter.

The Takeaway: Turning Passion into Purpose

What started as a way to blow off steam and gain popularity in high school turned into something much bigger. I found my purpose in fighting, and I’ll always be grateful for the lessons it taught me. The biggest takeaway? We all have a choice. You can let your past dictate your future, or you can turn your experiences into something productive. 💪

So, whether you’re looking to get into MMA or just trying to figure out what to do with your life, remember this: sometimes the thing that got you into trouble can also be the thing that sets you free.

Stay focused, stay disciplined, and keep fighting. 👊🔥
