Welcome to How I Broke This podcast, where entrepreneurs share their biggest failures and how they turned setbacks into remarkable comebacks. Hosted by Monica Dilon, this show dives into the journeys of inspiring individuals who have found their way from broken dreams to true success. Today, we are thrilled to welcome Ernie Harker, also known as the “Billion Dollar Branding Guy.” Ernie is a branding consultant, speaker, and author of Your Brand Sucks. 🎨🔥

The Early Days of Ernie Harker

Ernie’s journey into the world of branding started back in 1993 as a concept artist. Believe it or not, he initially aspired to be a Disney artist as a kid! Growing up with eight brothers and no sisters, Ernie didn’t have much TV time because his mom believed it turned them into “idiots”—so the TV ended up in the garage! 😂 Instead, he poured his energy into drawing, which eventually led him down the path of becoming a professional illustrator and branding expert.

His first big break came from working at an ad agency, visualizing concepts for other art directors who couldn’t draw. He describes his role back then as something like a “police sketch artist”—except instead of criminals, he was bringing brand ideas to life! 🎨

Branding Mavericks: From Country Store to Adventure Hub

One of Ernie’s standout accomplishments was transforming Maverik Adventures First Stop into a multi-billion-dollar brand. Back in the early 2000s, Maverik was known as Maverik Country Stores with a Western cowboy theme. The challenge? The owners felt the old cowboy look was outdated and didn’t resonate with modern customers.

Ernie and his team saw something deeper: the independent spirit of the Maverik brand. They leaned into the idea that customers, especially those going on outdoor adventures like snow skiing or hiking, gave themselves permission to buy more at gas stations during their travels. This insight led to the new brand tagline, Adventures First Stop, and the stores were redesigned to resemble contemporary mountain cabins! 🏕️⛽

Through this transformation, Maverik grew 600%, becoming a $3 billion company. 💥

Branding: It’s More Than Just a Logo

One of the biggest misconceptions Ernie addresses in his book is that branding is NOT just about the logo. 🖼️ Your logo is just a “keyhole” to your brand’s personality—it should hint at what you do, but the deeper story and customer experience are what truly define your brand. Whether you’re Nike, Coca-Cola, or a small business, knowing the emotion and reaction you want from your customers is essential.
